Needing an inexpensive pair? We also have durable, spring-hinged budget frames starting at $69.95 which include single-vision plastic (CR-39) lenses for an economical complete pair of glasses.
LENS MATERIALS
1) Glass - Although it provides the best optics and most scratch-resistance, glass is rarely used because of it weight. Non-prescription premium sunglasses use glass for its optical superiority, but adding prescription makes glasses too heavy.
2) CR-39 - This plastic material is the least expensive. It has decent optical qualities, but scratches very easily and appears heavy and thick with higher prescriptions.
3) Polycarbonate - Termed "thinner and lighter", polycarbonate lenses can dramatically reduce weight and edge thickness for moderate and high prescriptions and are the most impact-resistant of lens options. It is highly recommended for children's glasses for safety reasons.
4) Hi-Index - These plastics are the thinnest available for the highest of prescriptions and are the most expensive. Inherently, high-index lenses can reflect much more light away from the eye than other materials, decreasing clarity and night vision. However, an anti-reflection coating corrects this and allows them to perform very well for those with high prescriptions.
LENS OPTIONS
TRANSITIONS - www.transitions.com
Photochromic lenses are clear inside, but darken when exposed to UV light outside eliminating the need for a second pair of prescription sunglasses.
VARILUX PROGRESSIVES - www.varilux.com/en
Progressive or no-line bifocals allow for distance, intermediate, and near vision in one pair of glasses. However, peripheral areas of the lenses are somewhat distorted. Budget designs have a very small usable area making them very difficult for patients to adapt. Varilux lenses are a premium design with drastically improved usable lens area allowing for easier adaptation.
CRIZAL Anti-Reflection Coatings (AR) - www.crizal.com
All lens materials reflect light away from the eye. This decreases clarity, reduces night vision, and can create glare from a computer screen. AR coatings correct this resulting in increased clarity, less nighttime halos and improved contrast relieving eyestrain. It also improves the appearance of your lenses in your frame. Besides price, the differences between basic and premium AR coatings are durability and cleanability. Basic AR coatings can begin to strip off over time and can smudge very easy. Premium AR coatings, like Crizal Avance, resist cracking and repel water and oil to reduce smudging.
